Halfway through another year
Over the past month in my current sales position, I learned that I could (for lack of a better term) con inactive clients back by using phrases such as: “Can you believe it’s almost July? Let’s get you back in, signed up, etc..”
It worked like a charm.
But now as I reflect on June and these insistent reach outs, I realize I didn’t comprehend the gravity of my words at the time.
I do now.
It’s been 18 months since I retired from competitive soccer. It’s been 13 months since I graduated undergrad. It’s been 12 months since I became a full time working adult. And, it’s been six months since the beginning of 2024.
We are over halfway through another year that we will never get back.
I don’t know about you, but that was a jarring statement for me to come to terms with. But it’s also the motivation I needed to narrow my focus.
I wouldn’t say I’m unhappy with where I’m at so far this year, however, I believe in a world that chases perfection, there’s improvement to be made.
This is what improvement looks like for me as we start this seventh month:
Finish my book and read another
Embarrassingly, I’ve been “finishing up” the same book since April. I probably should have moved on by now, but I haven’t. So now's the time to put my head down and grind.
At this point I have less than 100 pages, so the task should go swimmingly. From there, I hope to channel the momentum into starting and finishing my next book before the end of the month.
Less screen time
In an age when media dominates, especially for this aspiring influencer, it’s easy to get swept up, distracted and become numb to screen time. My goal for July is to create healthy habits around my media use and specifically consumption time on both my phone and movie indulgence.
My boyfriend and I had originally built great habits around this, but they have since crumpled amongst the business and tiredness of life. We’ve found it easy to use TV at the end of the night as a crutch instead of a treat. Fortunately, we’re both on board with rebuilding those habits going forward.
More walk and talks
There’s nothing better than going for a walk (or a run) and yapping. There’s probably something scientifically proven about the benefits of this, but since we all have equal means and access to Google, I’ll let you handle that research.
Any who, I’ve learned that this one-on-one time is more sacred than I have previously believed it to be. So much so, it’s now wormed its way into my goals for July: at least two walk and talks during the week. It’s non-negotiable.
Rehab time
I’ve been an athlete my whole life. But until this last year I’ve always had resources close by to aid me with injury rehab when needed, whether it was my PT parents or Linf. training staff.
I have since learned the importance of “prehab”, also known as the act of getting ahead of the injury. No one likes being injured, but ultimately it’s part of any athlete’s journey. My priority this month, and hopefully a healthy habit in the making, is taking the time, or making the time, for prehab. My tangible goal is at least two times a week!
Run, run, run
I have a newfound love for running, but this love is easily forgotten. Something I’ve been struggling with recently is pushing things, such as running, to the side when I feel like I don’t have time, or am trying to fit in too many other new, exciting things, or simply don’t feel like doing it.
But to keep up my fitness and to prevent injury, I want to be better about consistent mileage week to week. Plus I also want to run a half marathon. Nothing crazy, not a real race, just going to do it for myself.
Vacation away
And lastly, if you, my dear reader, made it this far, I’ll let you know that I’m taking a week off in July to go hiking in Utah. I’m super stoked even though every time I tell someone about my trip all they say is, “It’s going to be so hot. You should go in the Fall instead.”
I know it’s going to be hot, thank you for your concern, but I’m waiting until I’m there and melting to complain. That’s what vacation is for.
